Casa Avalon, Byron Bay
Stay Here! Stories from rooms that feel like home…
For all intents and purposes, Casa Avalon is a timber box - one that unfolds slowly, revealing a home base for a wonderfully meditative stay where time seems to slow down - just for a moment.
Located a 20-minute drive from the bustling beachside town of Byron Bay, this two bedroom cabin is straight out of a storybook. When I describe it as a timber box - I mean it quite literally. Instead of glass windows, wooden barnyard doors and windows let in light, air, sounds of nature and the rustling breeze all throughout the property.
We discovered Casa Avalon purely by accident. While travelling with friends to Byron Bay for a summer getaway, we searched high and low for a semi-affordable, spacious accommodation that would comfortably fit four of us and an incredibly fluffy groodle - Maple.
Wonderfully, this Byron Bay hinterland Airbnb had everything we were looking for. It’s pet friendly, has a self contained laundry, stacks of books and games, spare towels for beach romps, and spacious enough that you won’t bump into your travel companions. For me personally, the highlight was the incredibly kitchen and the fire pit outside, perfect for stargazing on a cool night.
Why Casa Avalon is worth the visit -
The location -
It is worth noting that you’ll need a hire car to drive to Casa Avalon. Located a 15-20 minute drive from the centre of Byron Bay, it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quiet retreat rather than being in the thick of things, while being in easy reach of amazing restaurants and the lovely towns of Mullumbimby (a must visit) and Brunswick Heads.
The property itself is located on 11-acres of land surrounded by lush greenery that only a tropical climate can claim. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it curved road leads up a grassy hill to the cabin, where you’re greeted almost immediately by the gentle mooing of cows grazing in the field - right next door.
The Interiors -
Casa Avalon’s interiors are a mix of boho, beachy Byron Bay with a touch of vintage chic. Think linen bedding, rattan furniture, ancient looking cabinets and a long wooden farmhouse, layered against a plush designer rug that spans the length of the living room, and a Japanese-ish paper lamp gently swaying above it all.
The kitchen immediately stole my heart with its commercial-ish metal bench tops providing a contemporary edge against the softer surrounds, and a majestic Lacanche range cooker holds court at the heart of it all. Even the kitchen sink encourages a moment of reflection - looking over the fire pit and quiet wilderness surrounding the property.
On the opposite side, a sliding glass door replaces an entire wall, looking beyond to a wooden deck (perfect for morning yoga, I speak from experience), rolling hills and a winding road in the distance.
The bedrooms follow the same considered softness - encouraging a moment of pause. The larger room has a queen bed for those who want comfort, and the second room houses a delightfully rustic bunk bed - perfect for kids or two adults looking for a bit of childish whimsy. The dusty pink Spanish style bathroom completes it all - sunshine pouring through the windows, casting gentle shadows across the walls, as if the room had been lifted straight from a Spanish casa.
The feeling -
You know when you visit somewhere and your first thought leaving is, “I wish I'd stayed in more and made fewer plans?” That's exactly what Casa Avalon does to you.
There's no shortage of ways to fill the time without ever leaving the property. Cook a long, overly involved meal. Play the games stacked on the shelves. Curl up in front of the fireplace with the record player going. Take a book out to the deck and stay there until the light changes…
I found myself with serious kitchen envy, already daydreaming about a return visit spent cooking something ambitious and eating it at the wooden table dragged out into the afternoon sun. Wine flowing, rustling trees and mooing cows providing the soundtrack, laughter drifting off into the warm air.
Some places make you want to see everything. Casa Avalon makes you want to see nothing at all. And that, I think, is the rarer gift.
