Hot Honey Halloumi Sandwich

Turkish bread sandwich with avocado, halloumi, green apple and rocket

Preparation time: 20-30 minutes | Serves: 2 people

This sandwich recipe has got to be one of my favourites! Thick slices of golden, pan-fried halloumi in a soft Turkish roll, with creamy avocado, crunchy green apple and peppery rocket playing the supporting roles.

What ties it all together is the Crunchy Hot Honey from Soka Pantry. Made with chilli flakes, garlic, onion, sesame and raw honey, it’s an addictive combination of sweet, sticky, mouth numbing spice that will leave you combing back for more.

How to make my Halloumi Hot Honey Sandwich -

For this easy sandwich recipe, the halloumi is pan fried in hot honey which gives it a gorgeous, caramelised crust. Layered in lightly toasted Turkish bread with avocado and green apple slices, plus rocket for freshness, it’s a delightful balance of flavours and textures.

As with any sandwich, use my recipe as a guideline but feel free to adjust the quantities to your taste. I’ve included some suggestions and swaps in the recipe notes below.

I like the soft texture of Turkish bread, but you can use Focaccia, ciabatta or soft dinner rolls instead.

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado

  • 2 soft rolls (I used Turkish bread)

  • 1 pack of Halloumi (around 225 gms)

  • 2 tbsps. Soka Pantry Hot honey (plus extra for drizzling)

  • 1/2 green apple, sliced thin

  • Handful of rocket

  • Squeeze of lemon juice

  • Salt and pepper, according to taste

Method

  1. Cut the halloumi into thick slices, pan fry. Pat dry with a paper towel,

  2. Fry the slices in a single layer in a non-stick pan on medium heat.

  3. Drizzle one tablespoon of hot honey and fry until golden brown. Flip and repeat on the other side.

  4. In the meantime, mash the avocado until smooth with a squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper.

  5. To assemble, toast the bread, spread with smashed avocado, halloumi (drizzle more hot honey if desired), apple slices and rocket. Place the other slice of bread on top and serve right away.

RECIPE NOTES

Swaps, Serves & Storage

  1. What can I swap the halloumi with?
You can swap the halloumi with thin slices of firm cottage cheese (paneer) or firm tofu.

  2. What bread can I use instead of Turkish bread?
Focaccia or ciabatta are a great alternative to sourdough for this toasted sandwich recipe.

  3. What can I use instead of the Soka pantry hot honey?
For a quick hot honey recipe, mix 2-3 tbsps. of honey with a tsp. of chilli flakes. Microwave for 15-20 seconds and stir, then set aside for 10-15 minutes to infuse before using.

  4. Can I store this halloumi sandwich or prep it ahead of time?
I’d suggest eating this sandwich within a few hours of making it as the avocado will start turning bitter the longer it sits. For eg. if you’re making it in the morning, I’d eat it by lunchtime. The sandwich doesn’t reheat well, so eat I’d recommend eating it fresh.
